L7 10/24/17 Differences in Manners

Differences in Manners
Something that comes to mind for me when talking about differences in manners are some superstitions. There are some things in different cultures that are terribly offensive because they ar believed to bring bad luck.
Examples:
Opening an umbrella indoors- brings bad luck- United States
Breaking a mirror- brings bad luck- United States
Whistling indoors- brings death- Mongolia
Chewing Gum at Night- A sign of Cannibalism- Turkey
Crossing Fingers- Good luck- United States
There are many physical signs that mean different things, good or bad, depending on what country you are from. It is possible to offend someone without wanting to, and also to be offended without someone meaning to offend you.
It is important to be sensitive to the cultures and understandings of other people. Not everyone is aware of the stark cultural differences that exist, so it is important for those of us who know to be understanding, sensitive, and patient.
Teaching our students about cultural differences can help promote a global community, and encourage love and understanding.
